Thank you very much for all the information and new leads provided in your letter. The information provided by your correspondent, is in agreement with all the records I have found to date. Thank you again for your efforts on my behalf. D.B.

A miracle occurred in 2005 when Mr Garner contacted us because our uncle had died in 1937. We never new that he had left us any money and the inheritance was just wonderful to receive especially at my age of 87 years. Thank you, thank you very much. PTSA

Probate Genealogy:

Probate Genealogy research is a specialised discipline that lies somewhere between genealogy, private investigation and paralegal work. Genealogical skills are applied to identifying and tracing those people entitled to inherit from an estate.

Probate Genealogists are limited by law in who they can seek information on and they must obtain complete legal proofs for all events and events in order to complete a 'proof of kinship'

Where no Valid Will exists for a deceased person , probate genealogists follow the legal formula set out by the government of the state or country that the person resided in, to establish who the next of kin are and what their share of the estate will be.

Researching your ancestry

Initially, I would target the establishment of your ancestry back to the year 1800. Every project is necessarily different and depends on factors such as:

  • Quality of family legend,
  • How commonly found the surnames are,
  • Whether your ancestors lived in small towns or villages or were 'lost' in larger towns and cities,
  • Ease with which the registrations of births, marriages and deaths can be located .

Depending on your present age, a period of 200 years probably represents 4-5 earlier generations - a total of 30-62 ancestors.

Allowing for searching birth, marriage and perhaps even death indexes and censuses and the cost of acquiring Certificates to prove each step, you will probably need to budget a cost averaging out at about $100 for each person in your Tree although this will vary in practice and will certainly be much less if you already have some of the Certificates.

Compilation of Ancestry Charts:

From your own input I will Chart names, dates, events and places and forward this to you upon completion.

Arrangements maybe made for regular updating. Fee - $100 (maximum 30 ancestors)

Note - an additional fee may be requested if the input material is not presented in an orderly manner. An updating fee will be required which will reflect the extent of the updating taking place
